Toho’s “Godzilla” became a LEGO on Godzilla Day.
LEGO announced on Godzilla Day that the company is releasing the LEGO Ideas "Godzilla" set to be released on Friday, November 27th.
The project began as a Product Idea submitted to LEGO Ideas by New York-based Fan Designer Matthew Esposito, known as MattE720 on the platform. After more than two years, the idea reached 10,000 supporters and progressed to the LEGO Ideas review; his fan creation was taken forward by the LEGO Ideas Design Team, who developed the original concept into the final LEGO Ideas Godzilla set.
Esposito said that building Godzilla was a real passion project. The head was definitely the biggest challenge, but seeing the model come together and eventually reach 10,000 supporters after more than two years was incredible.
Senior Vice President, Consumer Products and Partnerships of Legendary Entertainment, Amber Sheppo, said that they were thrilled to partner with the LEGO Group to bring the titan to life in brick form. From Matthew’s original vision to this truly epic creation, the LEGO Group has been an incredible partner every step of the way.
LEGO Ideas is an official online platform run by The LEGO Group that lets fans submit custom model designs into real commercially available LEGO sets.
The rule for the custom model design is that fans build an original design (either physically or digitally) and publish a project page with photos and a description on the LEGO Ideas website. To support the project, it needs to gather 10,000 votes from the community (with early milestones like 100 votes in the first 60 days) to move forward.
Once a project hits 10,000 supporters, a formal LEGO review board evaluates the design based on safety, brand alignment, feasibility, and licensing. If approved, professional LEGO designers work with the creator to finalize the set for mass production.
The 5,363-piece set recreates textured, scaly gray skin and jagged blue dorsal fins. It features posable shoulders, elbows, wrists, fingers, and head. It has a configurable tail that can be assembled to curve to either the left or right side for display. The tongue can be replaced with an attachable blue Heat Ray blast effect for a mid-attack stance.
The LEGO Ideas Godzilla set is available at LEGO stores on Black Friday, November 27th, for US$449.99 or PHP28,568. Those who purchase the set from November 27th to 30th online and at LEGO Stores will receive the LEGO Ideas Godzilla Logo and Footprint set.
The 359-piece build recreates the recognisable Godzilla logo against a cityscape backdrop, complete with authentic details, including rival Mothra perched on one of the buildings, alongside a brick-built footprint, the exact size of the foot on the LEGO Ideas Godzilla set.
