Kenshi Yonezu’s “Lemon” has reached 1 billion views on YouTube.
The official YouTube channel of Kenshi Yonezu announced that "Lemon" has reached 1 billion views since the music video was released in February 2018, becoming the first Japanese-language song to cross the 1 billion views milestone.
According to Yonezu, he helped create something that became extraordinarily successful, but once it took off, he couldn't completely control its growth. He was simultaneously responsible for its creation and overwhelmed by its popularity.
A successful song can become so closely associated with the public that its creator starts losing the ability to define what it means. The audience may love the song for reasons that are completely different from the reasons the artist originally wrote it. This doesn't necessarily mean the artist hates the song. It means the relationship between the artist and the song has become complicated.
Even if the song eventually loses its popularity, he will still appreciate what it gave him. He doesn't need it to remain famous forever to recognize its importance in his life.
The song is a deeply emotional song about grief, loss, memories, and the lasting presence of someone who has passed away. It explores the pain of losing someone important and the difficulty of accepting that they are no longer part of your everyday life.
The song reminds listeners that life is precious because the people they meet and the relationships they build are not necessarily permanent. Sometimes, the hardest part of losing someone isn't simply saying goodbye. It's learning how to continue living when the person who once shared your everyday life is no longer there.
The song was featured in the Japanese drama series "Unnatural", which aired for 10 episodes in January 2018. The song was released as a single in March 2018 and featured on his 5th album, "Stray Sheep", released in August 2020.
It also received achievements including the MTV Video Music Awards Japan for Best Video of the Year and Best Male Video, and Best Theme Song at the 96th Television Drama Academy Awards in 2018, a 2-time Hot 100 of the Year at the Billboard Japan Music Awards in 2018 and 2019, a Gold Award at the JASRAC Awards in 2020, and Top Japanese Song in Asia at the Music Awards Japan in 2025.
