Sony PlayStation 5 has sold 97.9 million units, according to the company’s consolidated financial results.
Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 console has shipped 97.9 million units in the consolidated financial results for the fiscal year's second quarter, which ended last Wednesday, September 30th.
The company shipped 4.2 million units for the current fiscal year so far, with 2.6 million alone from the second quarter between July and September. In February 2026, the console had shipped 90 million units, after surpassing 50 million units in sales in December 2023.
In April 2026, Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 consoles and peripherals had a price increase due to continued pressures in the global economic landscape. The following month, in May 2026, they also had a price increase for the PlayStation Plus online gaming subscription service.
In July 2026, Sony announced that the production of the physical copies for the PlayStation 5 will be discontinued starting in January 2028. New games will be available on the PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.
In a statement, Sony Interactive Entertainment said it is adapting to consumer trends as the general preference for digital media significantly outpaces physical discs. This transition will enable it to align more closely with how most of the community prefers to access and play games today.
They will continue to prioritize their resources to drive innovation in how players can access games and provide choices as to where players prefer to purchase new games, whether that’s at retailers or the PlayStation Store. They remain committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience to players.
