Nintendo has no plans to abandon physical games.
Brazilian content creator Coelho no Japao interviews Vice President and General Manager for Nintendo Latin America, Bill van Zyll, regarding the discussion of physical copies for the Nintendo Switch at the recently concluded Brasil Game Show from October 9th to 12th in São Paulo, Brazil.
In an interview, Zyll said that the company considers consumer preferences when deciding how to distribute its games and recognizes how much fans value physical copies. He added that Nintendo remains flexible about distribution formats and takes players' preferences into account. The company's current position is to support both formats rather than favor one over the other.
Historically, Nintendo has been very agnostic. They go off what the consumer prefers and take that into account very heavily. So, there are no plans to ditch physical formats. They know how much the fans like it as well.
In July 2026, Sony announced that they are ceasing the production of the physical copies, and they are shifting into digital formats through the PlayStation Store and digital codes at participating retailers in January 2028.
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment, it is adapting to consumer trends as digital media preferences significantly outpace physical discs. Sony stated this transition aligns with how most of its community prefers to access games today.
Despite Sony's commitment to delivering a world-class gaming experience, the phase-out has sparked widespread frustration, online petitions, and backlash from physical collectors and preservationists.
In August 2026, Microsoft announced that the company is adding a new feature called disc-to-digital, allowing players to claim digital entitlements for Xbox One and Xbox Series X games. Through disc-to-digital, players can claim a digital entitlement by inserting a supported disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X console and launching the game. Once claimed, players can download and play the title digitally through Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Microsoft noted it is working on thousands of titles to convert from physical to digital and will continue adding more over time. The company calls this an important step toward a future where players can feel confident that their game purchases remain accessible for years to come.
