Tsukasa Monma's "Manchuria Opium Squad" receives an anime adaptation.

The official website of Tsukasa Monma's "Manchuria Opium Squad" announced that the series is getting an anime adaptation, and details about the anime, including the cast, staff, and premiere date, will be announced.

The story takes place during the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, and centers on Isamu Higata, a soldier for the Kwantung Army with a genius-level talent for botany and chemistry. He was driven initially by familial love and desperation, and morphs into a cold, brilliant criminal mastermind.

After his mother contracts plague, he utilizes botanical and chemical knowledge to make money by producing opioids, slipping into a deeper conspiracy where he encounters various gang members and oppressive government officials.

The manga series was published on Kodansha's Comic Days online platform from April 2020 to September 2021, and moved to Weekly Young Magazine in September 2021, where Monma wrote the series, which was released in 22 manga volumes, including the upcoming 22nd volume to be released on Friday, November 6th.

Shikako drew the series from April 2020 to July 2025, before she passed due to choroidal melanoma, and illustrator Tsurushima, a senior colleague of Shikako from their time working as assistants on Yasuhisa Hara's "Kingdom", will draw the illustrations in honor of Shikako and resume the manga in October 2026.

Kodansha's K Manga published the series digitally in English, and Kodansha USA licensed the series and released it in English, with the first manga volume released in September 2024.

It also received achievements, including a nomination for the Best General Manga category at the Kodansha Manga Awards in 2023 and a nomination at the Shogakukan Manga Awards in 2024.
