BioWare announces closure.
Electronic Arts announced that the company is closing BioWare on Wednesday, October 21st, as part of the broader corporate restructuring.
The main reason for the closure of BioWare is a 400-person company-wide layoff and restructuring. The decision follows years of underperforming releases such as "Anthem" and "Dragon Age: The Veilguard", rising development costs, and a broader corporate shift after EA went private.
Electronic Arts decided to pull the plug on early-stage development for the next "Mass Effect" video game rather than fund it further, shifting focus toward fewer, larger action-adventure franchises and reallocating resources to other teams such as Respawn and DICE.
The official website of BioWare released a statement after the closure. The company has been more than a studio for 30 years, and it has been a home for storytellers, developers, and the players who brought their worlds to life.
There is nothing easy about writing those words. They focus on their incredibly talented team, who put their hearts into these games and support one another through this transition. What generations built together is something to celebrate and remember. These games became so much more because the players played them, debated their choices, fell in love with the characters, and made these worlds their own.
BioWare is a renowned Canadian video game developer founded by medical school graduates Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip in 1995. They are known for developing video games such as "Mass Effect" and "Dragon Age" and licensed hits such as "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" and "Star Wars: The Old Republic". In 2007, Electronic Arts announced the acquisition of the company as part of a major corporate expansion.
