Japanese video game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto received the Order of Culture Award.
The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology announced that Japanese video game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto has been chosen as one of eight recipients of the prestigious 2026 Order of Culture Award, who became the first video game developer to receive the Order of Culture Award.
Miyamoto said this award reflects the work of many people, so he intends to accept it on their behalf. He had the opportunity to work with many people in genres other than games and the film business, and he would like to share the joy of this award.
When he joined Nintendo in 1977, he immediately started working on games, so it's actually been 50 years. He became involved with games as a medium that was barely tangible at the time, and he has been able to work in this field ever since. He thinks that he received this kind of treatment because he was there from the very beginning, and he had a very lucky life.
Miyamoto is one of eight recipients to receive the award along with lighting designer Motoko Ishi, architect Toyo Ito, professor emeritus at Tokyo University of Science Kenso Soai, biological scientist Tsuneyoshi Kuroiwa, French literature scholar Tetsuya Shiokawa, music composer and music copyright leader Shunichi Tokura, and immunologist Shigekazu Nagata.
The Order of Culture, also known as Bunka Kunsho, is Japan's highest civilian honor for contributions to the arts, literature, science, technology, and general culture. It is uniquely significant within the Japanese honors system and involves a few fascinating rules, constitutional workarounds, and cultural design choices.
In 2024, "Ashita no Joe" manga artist Tetsuya Chiba received the prestigious Order of Culture Award, becoming the first manga artist to receive the award since its establishment.
The awarding ceremony will take place on Culture Day in Japan, Tuesday, November 3rd.
